Samsung pulled back the curtain at Galaxy Unpacked on 22 July, and honestly? This was a good one.
The headline claim Samsung kept coming back to is that the Z8 range is the thinnest and lightest foldable lineup it’s ever produced, and this matters more than it sounds. Foldables have always had a bit of an image problem – while yes, you get the big screen, historically you also got something that felt like carrying a small paperback in your pocket. Samsung has spent this generation trying to solve that, and by most accounts, they’ve cracked it.
So then, we have three new phones. Which one is for you? Let’s get into it.
The updated range
The Galaxy Z8 series comes in three flavours: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold8, and the Galaxy Z Flip8.
Each one is aimed at a different kind of user, from the person who wants a full-blown mobile workstation to the one who just needs something fast, slim, and out of the way. And they all come ready to play nicely with your existing IT setup: Android 17, Samsung DeX (for plugging into a monitor and working like you’re at a desk), and native Link to Windows so your phone and laptop can actually talk to each other. Slot in and get working, basically.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
From this new range, the Ultra really is the headline so let’s start there.
Unfold it, and you’re looking at an 8-inch screen which is roughly what you’d get if you placed two standard smartphones side by side. For an executive reviewing a dashboard, an analyst knee-deep in a spreadsheet, or someone on a building site trying to check technical drawings without dragging out a laptop, that kind of real estate genuinely changes what’s possible on a mobile device. And here’s the bit that’ll raise your eyebrow: despite all that screen, the phone is just 4.1mm thick when open. That’s slimmer than most people’s wallets.
Both the Fold8 Ultra and the standard Fold8 are available with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of onboard storage – and 1TB is, frankly, a serious amount of space. We’re talking hundreds of thousands of documents, years of work files, thousands of high-resolution photos – all sitting locally on the device, no internet connection required. For anyone whose work involves large files or sensitive data they’d rather not have floating around in the cloud, that’s a meaningful option to have.
The camera deserves a mention too. The Ultra’s is 200MP wide – which, for a phone, is the kind of number that feels game changing. Whether your team is capturing site conditions, documenting client meetings, or producing content in the field, the results here are closer to a dedicated camera than anything you’d expect from something that fits in a jacket pocket.
Battery-wise, you get a 5,000mAh cell, which equates to running around 27 hours of video playback – comfortably enough juice to see you through a full working day. And if you do find yourself running low, Super Fast Charging 2.0 takes it from flat to 67% in about 30 minutes. That’s roughly the time it takes to grab a sandwich, so you can take lunch and come back to a phone that’s good to go.
Galaxy Z Fold8
If the Ultra is the executive’s power tool, the Fold8 is the reliable everyday workhorse – and at just 201g, it’s the lightest Fold Samsung has ever made. To give you a sense of that: it weighs about the same as a large chocolate bar, despite unfolding into what is essentially a tablet. Impressive bit of engineering, that.
The change that’ll matter most to business users isn’t the chip or the camera, though – it’s the display geometry.
The main screen has shifted to a 4:3 aspect ratio, which happens to be the same proportions as a standard sheet of A4. If you’ve ever tried to review a contract or read through a report on a regular smartphone and ended up pinching, zooming, and scrolling sideways like you’re solving a puzzle – you’ll understand immediately why this is a big deal. Documents just look right, the way they’re supposed to. It’s details like this that matter.
The battery here is a 4,800mAh typical cell (equivalent to roughly 26 hours of video playback) and charging via Super Fast Charging 2.0 gets you to 63% in 30 minutes. In short, plenty of battery for the working day – maybe even two.
Galaxy Z Flip8
The Flip8 is the smallest of the three, and it knows exactly what it is: a seriously capable phone that takes up as little of your life as possible.
At 180g, it’s light enough that you’ll occasionally forget it’s in your pocket. Folded, it slips into a shirt pocket. Open, it unfolds to a full 6.9-inch screen – plenty of room for anything work-related you’d want to do on a phone.
The party trick, though, is the 4.1-inch FlexWindow on the front.
This cover screen runs 22 applications, which means your team can handle emails, check their calendar, and manage notifications without ever opening the phone. It sounds like a small thing, but how many times a day you pull your phone out just to glance at something? Add that up over a full working day and you start to see why this matters. The Now Brief AI feature lives here too – giving you a summary of your schedule, travel updates, and key notifications right on the front screen before you’ve so much as unfolded the device.
For field-based workers, sales teams, or anyone who just wants a brilliant phone that stays out of the way, the Flip8 makes a very compelling argument.
Built to last
All three Z8 phones are made to handle daily business use without fuss. Samsung has used premium materials throughout – titanium and reinforced glass on the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra – so these don’t feel like devices you need to handle with care. They’re built to be used.
The crease question comes up every time someone mentions a foldable – and Samsung has made genuine progress here. The refined hinge and improved materials make it far less noticeable during everyday use. All three models also carry an IP48 water resistance rating, so a caught-in-the-rain moment or an unfortunate encounter with a sink isn’t going to be the end of the world. Or the phone.
